I have visited Thailand regularly for the past 10 years, and every time I am amazed by the following phenomenon: Despite the fact that Michael Learns To Rock’s heydays are long gone in Denmark (do they even exist anymore?) the song “That’s Why (you go away) ” simply refuses to leave the Thai playlists, and like a bad dream, the song pops up again and again, when you least expect it.
On the Krabi boat trip, on the weekend market in Bangkok or on Phuket nightclubs, – no place is sacred for this Danish hit, which most Thais can sing along (yep, karaoke versions are also available).
“That’s Why (you go away)” is from the album “Played on Pepper” (see MLTR’s website) which was released back in 1995 and thus, is more than 15 years old. Therefore I think it is time for Thailand to start looking for a substitute. I therefore consider bringing along a selection of Rasmus Seebach’s greatest hits next time I go to Thailand. Rasmus Seebach is also a Danish musician and his music is within the same genre, so there would probably be an audience. On the other hand, I do not think I will do it. If another multi-decade one hit wonder is created, it would been that I could risk spending my 25 year wedding anniversary in Thailand, sipping Singha beer with the song playing “Engel” on repeat in the background…scary.
